Professional indemnity insurance
All architects providing architectural services in the Northern Territory must have professional indemnity (PI) insurance with a minimum coverage of $1,000,000. This insurance requirement must be maintained throughout the entire duration of the architect registration.
Exemptions from PI insurance
You do not need PI insurance if you:
- have applied to and been granted an exemption by the NT Architects Board and are still within your approved exempted period
- work for the Commonwealth, state, or Territory governments
- have informed the board that you are not practising or providing architectural services in Australia, for example, if you are retired, practising overseas, on maternity leave, unemployed, or working outside the architectural sector.
For an exemption from PI insurance, you must apply to the NT Architects Board by using the below form:
Application form for an exemption from PI insurance DOCX (71.2 KB)
Application form for an exemption from PI insurance PDF (588.5 KB)
Notification of change in insurance status
If you stop being covered by PI insurance at any time throughout the duration of your architect registration, you must contact the board within 14 days of the date your coverage ended.
